Task 1: 1967 versus 1968

1967 and 1968 stand apart as two very different years during the 1960s. In someways they were part of a continum, or an ongoing process, but in other ways they represent a rising action and a climax. They represent optimism versus gloom and despair.

Directions:

  1. Use the information from the websites below and others, to create an Illustrated Essay in which you compare and contrast these two years and explain how they were symbolic of the 1960s.

  2. Your essay should be 3 paragraphs:
Paragraph 1 describing the Summer of Love and events in 1967
Paragraph 2 describing the changing climate in 1968, (including the assassination of MLK Jr., Robert Kennedy, the Tet Offensive, and the Democratic National Convention.)
Paragraph 3 comparing the two and reaching a conclusion about why they were so different.

  3. Use photos or images to illustrate your essay.

Task 2: What happened at Kent State University?

Photographer John Filo was a senior at Kent State University when anti-war demonstrations rocked the campus. When the National Guard began firing at student protesters, Filo began shooting pictures, narrowly escaping a bullet himself.

As he continued to document the horrific scene, a girl running to the side of a fallen student caught his eye. Just as she dropped to her knees and screamed, Filo snapped a photograph that would later win the Pulitzer Prize and become one of the most memorable images of the decade.

Write a paragraph with 2 illustrations describing what happened at Kent State University and why it remains a symbol of the Vietnam War era today.
