Assignment: 12 Angry Men

In the film 12 Angry Men, the theme of justice comes up once again.  In Antigone, the theme of justice is controversial--did Creon do the right thing?  Some argue that acting for the good of the state is valuable while others argue that the individual is more important than the state.

Look at the theme of justice in 12 Angry Men. At the beginning of the film, the jurors are convinced of the guilt of the defendant.  Throughout the story, though, juror eight convinces the other jurors, one by one, to vote not guilty.  Nowhere in the play is the truth discovered—whether or not the defendant is actually guilty.  However, he is acquitted at the end of the play.

Is justice achieved in 12 Angry Men?  Is a jury the best way to achieve justice?  What would have happened if Creon had been tried by a jury of his peers?

Write a one-page, double spaced essay in which you answer these questions.
