Read Scene 2, Ode 2, Scene 3, and Ode 3

Conflicts multiply and intensify in the second scene. Antigone is caught reburying her brother, is brought before Kreon, and confesses. In the third scene, Haimon, son to Kreon and fiancée to Antigone, confronts his father, the king.

Discussion Board Assignment--Historical Examples: Antigone says the citizens of Thebes are afraid to speak out against Kreon, even though they disagree with him:

"All these men here would praise me/Were their lips not frozen shut with fear of you" (scene 2, lines 99-100).

What historical and contemporary examples can you give of citizens who failed to protest immoral actions by their leaders? What motives besides fear might cause citizens to remain silent in such cases?
