As you work on this unit, exploring nonfiction, developing media literacy, and locating resources, you will spend time researching and collaborating. One goal of this unit is to allow you to make connections between Fences or The Bean Trees and the world we live in today.  Another it to help you develop your ability to gauge the cause and effect between mass media coverage and public opinion. For one of the final products, you will choose a topic from Fences or The Bean Trees, research the topic further, and demonstrate your ability to use multiple streams of simultaneous information through the creation of a web page (among other assignments). During this unit, you will:
  1. Choose a topic that relates to Fences or The Bean Trees. Examples include, but are not limited to: parents, racism, dreams, immigration.

  2. Research your topic.  Your research will include:

    • nonfiction article that relates to your topic

    • a media message (website, blog, or video) that relates to your topic

  3. Evaluate the sources to verify the accuracy, validity, and usefulness of information. Create an annotated bibliography based on your evaluation.

  4. Collaborate when working on research and topics

  5. Based on your research, you will create a webpage using GoogleSlides. It will be on the topic you chose and include the following:
      1. An explanation of topic you chose

      2. A link to the article (including a graphic) with an explanation of its perspective

      3. A brief summary of your second media message and how it relates to the text

      4. How this connects to the world we live in today/why this matters/a call to action
