A Study of Style: The Bean Trees

Writing Assignment:

Part One: Review your quotations/themes charts from Lessons 1 and 2.  Write a paragraph about one theme from your chart. Support your analysis and elaborate with direct quotations from the story. Highlight your claim in red, your evidence in green, and your commentary/analysis in blue.  Be sure to cite your quotations in correct MLA format.


Part Two: Answer the following questions about The Bean Trees:

Describe the author’s style. Is Kingsolver’s word choice formal or informal? Is her diction colloquial? Does she use slang? Dialect? Support your answer with examples from the text.

Does Kingsolver use mainly simple, compound, or complex sentences? Does the sentence type differ depending on the character(s) she describes? Again, provide examples from the text that support your answer.
