Skill: Making Inferences

Making/Supporting Inferences in The Bean Trees:

Inferences should be made in response to material in a text. Remember the comic of the judge literally throwing the law book at the defendant? The inference there was the sentencing phase of the case was not going well for the defendant; most likely, the defendant was to receive the maximum penalty allowed by law (the law book).

Here is an example of an inference from the text, The Bean Trees. The inference is about Lou Ann's character (she doesn't like conflict) paired with a quote from the text (Lou Ann delays telling her mom her plans).

QUOTE

INFERENCE

Example “Lou Ann hadn’t yet broken the news that, when the baby was born, the plan was to give it a Catholic baptism.” (28) Lou Ann does not like conflict, so she postpones telling her mother something that would upset her. Also, she is relenting to Angel’s wishes regarding the baptism, showing how out-of-control she feels about her life.

The Bean Trees Making Inferences Assignment:

Note: This chart is on your assignment sheet. On the left side of the chart, there are some quotations from The Bean Trees. If there is a quotation on the left side of the chart, write an inference based on the quotation.

On the right side of the chart, some inferences are written. If there is an inference on the right side of the chart, find a quotation from The Bean Trees that would support that inference.
