The two primary texts of this unit reflect the struggle of two strong
female protagonists to establish an independent voice. Look to
The
Bean Trees to function as a base text from which to explore the
poetic elements in the excerpts from
The House on Mango Street.
As you read these two works along with the supplemental readings, keep
in mind the following questions:
- How can ones name reflect ones strength and identity?
Is it possible to accurately name oneself?
- How else do we define our identity? Gender? Family? Culture? Heritage?
- What is the definition of family?
- How do the invisible boundaries created by man, which surround his
countries, also create boundaries within humanity as a whole? Is
it possible to trespass within humanity?
- Is it possible to be truly independent? Is it desirable?
