  1. Read: Columbus' Letter to the Treasurer of Spain (1493) and write a paragraph that summarizes what the piece reveals about Columbus' reasons for embarking on his voyages.
  2. Read: On the Destruction of the Indies (1540s) Explain how this account reveals de La Casa's beliefs about the purposes of Spanish colonization in the Western hemisphere?
  3. Read: The Interesting Life of Olaudah Equiano (1750) and explain how this type of personal account helps historians analyze the past and how it help you better understand Equiano's experience.
  4. Read: The First Charter of Virginia (1606) and then summarize what you learned about the English attitude towards colonization and settlement in the Western Hemisphere.
  5. Read: What Happened Till the First Supply (1607-1614) by John Smith. What parts of this account are based on facts and what is based on opinion? How does that affect they way that you interpret and analyze this document?
